This is the view from our hotel room, looking to the right. It’s Happy Valley Racecourse, which is named for the cemeteries which overlook it on a nearby hill. The sports pitches were in almost continuous use, as was the jogging track which went around the inside of the racecourse. In the evening it was floodlit and looked rather pretty.
The course was established in 1846, I found this picture which shows it in its early days. It looks a bit different now! I reckon our hotel would be at the top middle of the track as shown below.

There was a race night on the Wednesday so we popped across. It’s only ten Hong Kong dollars to get in – about eighty five pence! It was absolutely heaving with people and I actually felt quite uncomfortable, which was a shame as it was the first time I’ve been to the races. We only stayed for a while, enough to see one race, then we went back to the hotel. The oldies managed to stop a bit longer!
