I was walking the dogs this afternoon and came across this beauty in the bottom of a hedge. As far as I know there are no peacocks in the area!
Some people believe that feathers, especially white ones, are messages from your guardian angel or a deceased loved one. In fact you can hardly open one of the ‘mind body spirit’ magazines without finding a story about spirits communicating by leaving feathers!
I agree that feathers can be messages, although I do have a few provisos. For example in the late summer/autumn I could hardly leave the house without finding woodpigeon flight feathers, sometimes four or five in the course of a walk. Did I think they had a message? Not really, it was moulting season!
However if the feather appears in an unusual place, or is from an unusual species of bird, or one that it significant in some way, such as a feather from your bird totem or a bird associated with a particular Deity, then I think it’s safe to say that there is a message for you there. What you have to do then is go away and think about it. Start by recalling any lore you have read or heard, or any personal or family stories about the bird, then journey, meditate, or just think about it. When you have done all this inner work, you can go and look up specific bird lore from books or the net and see if anything there tallies with your experiences or can give you other avenues to explore.
My homework is to try and work out what message the peacock feather has for me. Maybe it was simply to cheer up a dull day!
Apart from the ethereal beauty of the sun on the feather, it was a pretty dreary walk. We escaped most of the wind here but it has rained heavily every day, the fields are sodden and everywhere is wet, muddy and brown. There was one sign of spring though, a single hazel had produced catkins!
