There was excitement in the Setantii when it was discovered that the new Wild Wood Tarot contained a stoat as one of the Pages!
This tarot has been created by Mark Ryan and John Matthews and has been illustrated by the wonderful Will Worthington, who was OBOD’s previous Pendragon. My set arrived a couple of days ago and I must say I am impressed both by the artwork and the accompanying book. The cards themselves are the traditional size (as compared to the new larger style used in the Animal & Plant Oracles or the Druidcraft Tarot) and I feel that they fit better in the hand. The cards are linked to a journey through the Wheel of the Year which is familiar to most pagans; although they do have a slightly different set of associations to traditional OBOD teachings- it’s nothing you can’t adjust to given time – so we have the turning seasons, the festivals and associated animals. Some of the figures in the Tarot pack are replaced by different archetypes from the Wild Wood, which brings in the energy of beings such as the Green Man. It appeals to me intrinsically as so many of the characters and the images seem to connect deeply with my psyche. They just feel right. I’m looking forward to working with the cards, although my use of Tarot is more often as a meditation tool than for divination, there are a few helpful and straightforward spreads which are explained well and might well tempt me to try my hand!
