….a building of her nest ’
About a week ago I noticed that a pair of crows had begun to build a nest in the oak at the bottom of the garden. I am really pleased, although my Mum has been foretelling doom. A lot of people are wary of the crow family, it’s their black plumage and the association with carrion I expect.
The nest building is still proceeding slowly, I’m surprised how long it is taking them, but saying that, each twig is selected individually and is pulled off a tree not picked up from the ground. It makes sense that they use green springy twigs that have more flexibility. When the outer woody nest is complete, they line it with mud and grass and then another layer of moss or hair. Ours probably have a lovely snuggly layer of kapok, as the new puppy has been disembowelling his soft toys out in the garden and leaving the carcases lying around like so much roadkill!
Part of me is wondering if they have any spectacle frames up there…
