I get the paper copy of Cygnus Review each month. Cygnus is a bookshop which offers titles on health and healing, spiritual transformation, personal growth, psychic development and environmental concerns at reduced prices. They provide an excellent service and have a large catalogue, over the years I have ordered quite a few books from them.
However it has to be said that a lot of the stuff is, in my humble opinion, quite frankly the worst sort of ‘fluffy bunny’ New Agey twaddle. My particular bete noire is the spiritual guru who has worked their way through whole series of books and their spin off products, and now has an expanding franchise to enable others to ‘teach’ their techniques in classes. These were based on angels, then unicorns and now, the latest spiritual catch-on, orbs (don’t even get me started!)
In the latest edition I came across this book. The accompanying blurb says “Switching to Goddess explores the profound transformation that must come about, by moving away from 6000 years of god-worship, returning to the way of goddesses. God-worship is entwined with a starvation culture of war and unconscious fear, whereas goddesses are earth-based, peaceful and nurturing mothers.”
Whoa! I can think of a lot of violent, destructive and terrifying Goddesses. How about Kali, the Cailleach, even Diana. I am half tempted to buy the book to see how they support their argument. The idea is that if we switch to Goddess worship “the world can become a peaceful and fiercely environmentally conscious set of communities sharing a Mother Goddess ethos of unconditional love.”
Hmm, go tell that to Mother Jaguar, cross her and she will rip your heart out!
Kali – thought of as the Goddess of death and destruction, she should really be looked on as the representation of time and change. This of course can be a positive thing, despite being random and terrifying.
