Knowing my love of stones of all kinds Bogart, my music buff friend, has tipped me the wink about this album by Emil Richards’ New Sound Element. The article from Mojo he showed me was in the ‘Weird Record Club’ section, which should have given me a clue, as the record, is, well, weird to say the least!
Emil Richards is a famous percussionist and has worked with Sinatra, Zappa, the Beach Boys and loads of other famous artists and on hundreds of film and tv scores. This record was made with his own band, New Sound Element. The tracks are named after the twelve birthstones, Garnet, Amethyst etc.
Jonny Trunk of Mojo says ‘a strong musical stomach is required to take in the insane tempos, harsh instrumentation and wibbly wobbly electro-madness’. I have only managed to find a sliver of Sarydonyx to listen to and it reminded me of lift muzak on speed. Can’t say that I will be rushing out to buy the CD but it is an interesting concept and probably a child of it’s time – it was recorded in 1966.
